J.Cortes
J.Cortes is a Belgium cigar manufacturer known for its machine rolled cigars. Founded in 1926 by Mautits Vandermarliere, a former sextant who had decided to move into the potentially lucrative tobacco industry.
He started his business in the attic of the family home. As demand got higher he was allowed by his neighbours to break through the attic wall to be able to use the extra space above their premises. By 1936 demand had reached such heights that he purchased a factory space to take the business to the next level.
Maurits and his wife would have 8 children, of which 5 would enter the family business. In 1965 the youngest son Guido was promoted to head of exports. His keen eye and great industry sense propelled the company further than before. In the mid 1970s J.Cortes would acquire Neos Cigars, a popular mini cigar brand. Only a few years later they would also acquire the TAF cigar factory. This allowed the company to drastically increase production.
In 1986 J.Cortes would open a new factory in Sri Lanka. By this stage J.Cortes cigars were being sold in over 80 countries. In 2005 Guido’s son Fred joined the business. Fred had been in love for years with the well known Oliva Cigar brand and made a push to buy the company. Today the Vandermarliere and Oliva family work together, sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience.
