A “veguero” is a Cuban name for a tobacco farm hand who tends the crop. The factory in which the Veguero brand manufactures its cigars started out its life as a prison before becoming a hospital and finally a cigar factory. From 1961 the cigars produced here were just for domestic sales, state banquets and other activities. The locals dubbed the cigars “Vegueros” and in 1997 Habanos S.A started the export them globally.
