By chance a business man named Kaizad Hansotia in 1989 was on vacation in his ancestral homeland of India when he came across a Portuguese man hand rolling cigars under the name of ‘Gurkha’. In awe of the whole process and taken aback by the quality Kaizad bought all the stock the roller had for a mere $149. Originally he planned to distribute them as gifts between business clients but saw a business opportunity arise when a friend and duty free tobacco store owner sold some and had rave reviews from the customers. He went on to contact Charlie Torano who agreed to roll the first Gurkha brand cigars for market. Over the next three decades the brand has continued to expand becoming a staple amongst new world cigars, sought after across the globe.
