A Cuban History
Abdel J Fernandez was born and raised in the rural countryside of Cuba. His childhood was spent in his local region of San Luis, Pinar Del Rio. This area is known for its production of the highest quality tobacco sought after for cigar manufacturing.
As with all children in Pinar Del Rio he would become familiar with tobacco. He acutely listened and learned as his father and uncle would talk of their work on a tobacco farm.
By his formative years as a teenager he was returning home from long school days to spend his evenings working at the Finca La China tobacco farm. Cuban cigar legend Alejandro Robaina would cross paths with Abdel, bestowing him with knowledge that was kept within close circles.
Migration & Work Experience
The seed had been planted in a young Abdel’s head. A dream, to head to somewhere he could start his own brand. With his sights set towards Nicaragua, he began a journey that would lead him to become one of the biggest names in New World cigars.
By 2004 he had touched down in Esteli and was working for another uncle, Nestor Plasencia. In almost no time he had left to start his humble venture with half a dozen rollers working out of a small garage space.
From here he went on to start manufacturing cigars for more established brands and by 2008 he had bought his first farm. With such high demand for his cigars from companies such as Rocky Patel and Gurkha, the work was hard but rewarding.
In 2010 the first A.J. Fernandez cigars went to market, the San Lonato. Since then he has gone on to release hit after hit, with such lines as Last Call, Bella Artes and Enclave. His company now operates out of 7 factories with his cigars being bought worldwide.
