The History
Since 1914, the Rokin in Amsterdam has housed one of Europe’s most esteemed cigar establishments: Huis Hajenius. The roots of Hajenius extend back to 1826 when the ambitious 19-year-old Pantaleon Gerhard Coenraad Hajenius relocated from Doesburg to Amsterdam with a singular vision – to establish a cigar shop exclusively offering the finest products.
Young Hajenius, a remarkable entrepreneur, strategically chose the Rijnstroom Hotel on the Vijgendam, near the bustling tobacco trading center with 30 cigar manufacturers. This location, near a prosperous clientele, proved ideal for realizing his ambitious dreams. By collaborating with the best cigar makers and using premium tobacco, he created his own Hajenius cigars, which achieved immediate success.
Notable figures, industrialists, and even royalty sought out his cigars, extending their popularity beyond borders. As demand grew, the initial store became insufficient, prompting a move to a larger space on the Dam.
