Vega Robaina
Vega Robaina was founded by one of the most heralded Cuban tobacco farmers, one Alejandro Robaina. Whilst most plantations would only see around 35% of their harvest selected for use as a wrapper leaf whilst Alejandro would see around 80% of his be selected for this use.
Alejandro was born in the Alquizar region before being moved as a child to the famous tobacco growing region of Vuelta Abajo. His family had a long history of growing tobacco here dating back to 1845. By only ten years of age he had smoked his first cigar and was already busy helping his family on the farm.
When Maruto Robaina, Alejandro’s father passed away in 1950 he would take over the business. After the Cuban revolution in 1959 Robaina was one of the few growers who were allowed to remain an independent grower whilst the majority were being nationalised.
Through his years of work Alejandro Robaina was called by many “the godfather of Cuban Tobacco” as a recognition of his superior growing skills. In 1990 Habanos S.A officially recognised Robaina as the best tobacco grower and followed up this honor in 1997 by announcing the creation of the Vega Robaina cigar brand.
Vega Robaina has gained many fans for its spicy yet nutty flavour profile and medium-bodied tone.
