Padron
Sometime in the mid 1800s when a migrant from the Canary Islands called Damaso Padron arrived in Cuba. For many years he worked hard in the tobacco fields of Pinar Del Rio before managing to save enough money to buy a small family farm and eventually open a small cigar factory in the local town. In 1926 his grandson, Jose Orlando Padron was born. In 1961, after the Cuban Revolution, Castro nationalised the Padron family farm. This left Jose Orlando Padron only one choice, to leave the country.
In 1962 he moved to Miami and took to doing carpentry work. His friend had gifted him a little hammer to help him get started. Through hard work and with the help of the little hammer Jose saved $600, enough to start up the Padron Cigars business in 1964. Originally he started out with a single roller who would roll 200 cigars a day. By 1976 he had made ties with the Nicaraguan Tobacco Co who wanted him to start using tobacco from the Jalapa valley. When Jose incorporated it into the blend he was impressed by the public reaction and made a permanent change to the new blend.
In the early 1970s the company moved to Nicaragua. At the time the country was in the grip of a fierce civil war and by the end of the decade the factory that Padron had established had been burnt down. After this unfortunate event the company moved over the border to a factory in neighbouring Honduras. In 2003 he would finally open another factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. Currently Padron is known as one of the best premium New World cigar brands on the market.
