Oliva Cigar Co.
Oliva Cigar Co. (also known as Tabacalera Oliva Tabolisa) has a long history spanning over a century. It all starts with Melanio Oliva in Cuba, 1886. Melanio started producing tobacco in the famous Pinar Del Rio region. The business was good and ownership transitioned to his son, Hipolito Oliva in the 1920s and then to Hipolito’s son Gilberto Oliva Sr. After the Cuban Revolution Gilberto would stop producing and become a tobacco broker.
Ten years later, in 1969 Gilberto would begin producing tobacco in Nicaragua where he would have a prosperous farm until another revolution would uproot the Oliva family. The Sandinista Revolution would see the family flee the country. They would return to Nicaragua in 1995 after touring the globe in attempts to find ideal locations for growing tobacco. On their journeys they would grow tobacco in Honduras, Panama, Mexico and the Philippines. Gilberto would always maintain that Nicaragua was the best place to grow tobacco outside of Cuba.
In 2003 Oliva built a new factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. This allowed the business to up their output dramatically and in the following years the company was shipping millions of cigars annually. In 2016 the company was bought by the J. Cortes Cigars. The family still play active roles in the brand supervising and contributing to the designing of new blends.
