Hoyo De Monterrey
Jose Gener was only 13 years old when he migrated to Cuba from Tarragona, Spain. Upon his arrival he would work tirelessly at his uncle’s plantation in the Vuelta Abajo region. Over the next 20 years he would hone his skills, watching and absorbing all the information he could regarding the growing and processing of tobacco. Then in 1865 he opened his own factory. Here he would manufacture La Escepcion cigars.
Gerner was shrewd and took these profits and purchased some of the best land available in the Vuelta Abajo region. The cigars he would produce here were named Hoyo de Monterrey. In English the name translates to “the Hole of Monterrey”, a homage to the concave terrain that is ideal for growing quality tobacco.
Hoyo de Monterrey was a success, proving exceptionally popular in the British market. This would see the company make large profits, eventually becoming one of the biggest manufacturers in Cuba. After Jose Gener’s passing in 1900 his daughter would helm the ship for the next 30 years before it was finally sold outwith the Gerner’s.
