Asylum
Asylum is the renegade brainchild of Tom Lazuka, a long time employee of Christian Eiroa. As a regional sales representative he would stay with the company when it transitioned to Davidoff, remaining there until his contract was complete. During his time traveling the country for work he would notice a pattern when attending cigar shops. He would note in an interview with Cigar Aficionado that “I would see empty 70 boxes on the shelves, but they were never in stock. I would ask the retailers, ‘Do these things sell?’ All the stores would say, ‘Yeah, when we have them, but we never have them.”
This was the impetus behind the Asylum’s creation. Lakuza would approach Christian Eiroa with his idea, only to have Christian tell him it was the worst idea he had ever heard. Eiroa stated they would have to be called Asylum, as the idea was crazy. He agreed to manufacture them for Lakuza in Nicaragua on the sole fact that he wanted to be able to tell him “I told you so” when it failed. This was not to be the case, much to Eiroa’s surprise the large ring gauge Asylum’s were a huge success when they hit the American market.
