Introduction
Radford Tobacco was a prominent English manufacturer whose products adorned the shelves of tobacconists throughout the 1900s. Originating in Harrow, London the company had many popular pipe tobaccos and snuffs, a few of which remain to this day. The company itself no longer produces these products, rather passing the blends on to other companies to carry the torch.
Gawith Hoggarth: Radford’s Old Scotch
This loose pipe tobacco is manufactured by Gawith & Hoggarth and follows a classic Radford recipe. Made from a mixture of Virginia, Burley and a smooth, slow burning Double Fermented Black Cavendish this blend burns evenly and at a leisurely yet consistent rate.
When nosed a sweet yet well mannered aroma of marmalade and slight alcoholic notes are present. This is owed to the fine Scotch Whiskey topping that has been applied to the blend, creating what can only be described as an entertaining everyday smoke.
This blend is great for newcomers and well rounded smokers alike, with its strength being a light-medium and the flavour being that of a supporting role rather than a dominating or overbearing aroma.
Radford’s Old Scotch manages to replicate the old era of aromatics, ones that don’t tongue bite, before the American & European wave of cavendish dominant and extremely aromatic blends became popular.
Gawith Hoggarth: Radford’s Mixture [Formerly Sobranie Blue Reserve]
Gawith Hoggarth Radford’s Mixture is a stand-in for the highly sought after Blue Reserve by Sobranie, discontinued many years ago.
This blend has a variety of tobaccos making its base, Virginia, Kentucky, Burley & Oriental are combined to great effect and are only further enhanced by the deluxe topping applied to it.
Radford’s Mixture also utilises a fine Scotch Whiskey for its flavouring but owing to the different base tobaccos from Old Scotch, has a drastically different aroma and taste.
Perhaps one of the most popular aromatics, this blend has been compared to that of a walnut whip, having nutty and blossom like tones.
A slightly more moist blend than that of Old Scotch, this rich and luxurious tobacco is a slow sipper. The room note is sure to garner attention from those around.
Pöschl: Radford Snuff
Not only were Radfords known for their fantastic pipe tobaccos, but also their snuffing tobaccos. Presently this snuff is manufactured by Poschl who adhere to the original recipe provided by J.Brumfit & Radford Tobacco Ltd.
This snuff is recommended as a good snuff for users of all experience levels and features a refreshing mentholated scent. The tobacco is finely ground, brown and has a nice semi moist consistency that aids it in being not too messy to snuff that may cause only a little run.
It can’t be overstated that those partial to menthol snuff will be impressed with the scent, cool and invigorating with a slightly medicinal hint to it. Radford snuff comes in a generous 25 gram tin that seals tightly and keeps well if kept in a cool and dark place.
