Introduction
Bolivar takes its name from Simon Bolivar, one of the most influential figures of the 19th century, famed for his liberation of much of South America from Spanish rule.
The Bolivar brand was created in 1902 and is based today out of the Partagas factory in the heart of Havana.
Much like their namesake, Bolivar are strong, bold and full of personality. Today we focus on the highly limited Vintage No.1 Tubos.
No.1
At first glance the corona format No.1 may seem unimposing, many preferring to opt for something around the robusto size may even pass up the opportunity to smoke this gem. Their loss! For those willing to take a chance on the No.1, a tour de force of Cuban flavour awaits.
When first lit this cigar imparts a smooth, creamy pepper tone that is backed up by a full bodied nicotine hit.
Heavy earthy notes open up with slight floral accompaniments, a true delight. Despite its modest size the No.1 can smoke from anywhere between 30 – 60 minutes.
Vintage
What makes these special cigars even more sought after is their extra ageing. The Vintage No.1 has been carefully aged for over two decades. What this does is allow the tobacco to mellow out, not in nicotine content but in body and taste.
Another notable feature is the original, vintage packaging. This striking red tube will be recognisable to those smoking Cuban cigars in the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s but for those who came after, Bolivar is synonymous with a light yellow/beige packaging.
It is highly unlikely that something like these will cross your path again and as such, we highly recommend trying them whilst they are available.
Conclusion
Bolivar’s Vintage No.1 Tubos are truly a once in a lifetime cigar that any connoisseur will be in their element when smoking. For most of us, ageing a cigar for 20 years in the correct conditions and all the while not smoking it is a near impossible feat. Thanks to Bolivar we don’t have to undergo that arduous test and can try a piece of history for a small premium.
